WASH AND GO ON 4C HAIR FOR A WEEK?!
WHAT'S THE TEA?
I tried a wash and go for seven full days on type 4b/4c hair and some pretty surprising things happened. I’ve always considered my hair to be pretty hopeless when it comes to wash n goes. Type 4b/4c hair really doesn’t have curls that can be defined. It tends to be kinky coily, have a ton of shrinkage, and tangles very easily. Wash and gos seem like a type 4 naturals worst nightmares – and for nearly 10 years it was mine too. That’s why I’ve done this experiment for you. To face my fear of the wash and go. Some fears were confirmed, but some fears were completely debunked. Grab some popcorn and hang out for this VLOG style seven day rollercoaster.

Some Key Takeaways
Detangling Every Day Sucked.
I won’t sugarcoat it. I hated having my hands in my hair day in and day out. Surprisingly, my hair didn’t get as tangled on a day-to-day basis as I thought it would. My detangling time (40 minutes) was exactly the same as it has been before this experiment.
It’s Expensive.
I failed to mention just how much product I went through during these seven days. My conditioner bottle only has about 1/4 of product left and it was practically brand new before I began. I used a healthy amount of eco styler gel and leave-in as well. Wash and gos are an expensive hair style.
There Wasn’t Much Breakage.
Of course I’ve only done this style for seven days, but I did expect a lot more breakage and shedding. Perhaps I can credit my success to moisturizing daily and the general health of my hair, but it didn’t fall out! I did a happy dance at the end of the week. Seriously.
Products Matter.
In the video, I mentioned running out of my favorite leave-in by the brand Kinky Curly and having to substitute for one by Carol’s Daughter. I’m a huge fan of CD, but the leave-in didn’t compare. The finished results just were never as good as the first day. However, I do think that hair being stripped daily of its natural oils would make any product struggle over time.
Gel Isn’t Essential, But it Helps With Curl Definition.
On day six and seven I styled my wash and go with Eco styler gel (with olive oil). I got the most amazing coil definition, hands down. The other days I used a leave in and oil, and while I did get SOME definition, it didn’t compare. The trade off for me was lack of moisture. The eco styled gel will more than likely leave your hair dry and brittle. I’d recommend using flaxseed gel or something with a softer, hydrating hold if you plan to do this style long term.
