HOW TO WEAR THE BELTED BLAZER TREND
This trend has been around for decades, but it has made a resurgence in the past few years as being one of the trendiest ways to wear a blazer in 2021. I’ll break down what made this look work so you can apply the same principles to your own wardrobe.
FIND A GREAT BELT
When choosing the right belt there are a few factors I like to keep in mind.
- What will the belt be cinching?
- What color and material makes sense for your look?
- And where will the belt sit on your torso?
I bought this belt online from H&M. I chose a relatively inexpensive retailer because I’m not sure if this is a trend I’ll want to wear year after year yet. For this particular look, choose a belt meant to stand out. The velvet material and knotted detail in the front are perfect features meant to incite intrigue. Sometimes the belt can match the blazer, but the hardware makes it pop. Sometimes it’s the texture or color.
If the belt is meant to cinch a thin fabric, it doesn’t have to be as heavy duty. However, if you plan to belt a bulky coat, choose a belt made of leather or another durable material to hold heavy fabric together and withstand the weather. If the belt is meant to sit on your natural waist, try to find one that’s adjustable in some way without adding more bulk or hanging material. This belt hooks in the back and has elastic bands that expand and contract as needed. It’s the perfect belt to cinch a blazer and it comes in a tan color. I bought both.

THE PERFECT BLAZER
Blazers come in many fabrics, colors, weights, and materials. I chose a lightweight soft grey blazer because of the neutral color and thin fabric. My belt fits snuggly so I wanted a blazer that wouldn’t be too difficult to clasp. I also like that there’s such a large contrast in the colors. The light grey helps the belt stand out and gives the illusion of a smaller waist.
The belt could also match the blazer and still make just as much impact.

KEEP THE BASE OUTFIT SIMPLE. OR NOT.
I tend to think that planning ahead is a major key to making any outfit work in your favor. If the blazer and belt are serving monochrome, perhaps the bottoms or top is the standout piece. For my outfit I chose light wash distressed denim jeans and a white top. The whole ensemble is in a soft, cool palette which is refreshing for the Fall season, and the boots, hat, handbag, and belt match. The black accents pull the look together and help give more of the classic Fall outfit vibe.
